LangGraph vs CrewAI vs OpenAI AgentKit vs Anthropic Deep Agents: The 2026 Buyer's Guide
The four frameworks that ate 2026
If you've been asked to "just plug in an agent" this quarter, you already know the problem. There are now four production-grade agent frameworks fighting for the same POC, each with a devoted following on X, and each one produces very different bills at the end of the month.
In this piece we'll cut through the marketing. We build multi-agent systems for enterprise clients across the UAE, KSA, and India, and every one of those engagements starts with the same question — which framework do we use, and what will it cost us in twelve months? This is the answer we now give.
What "agent framework" actually means in 2026
Before comparing anything, it's worth defining the category, because the four contenders are not the same shape.
An agent framework in 2026 usually covers three concerns:
- State orchestration — how a multi-step task is decomposed, retried, resumed, and observed.
- Tool invocation — how the LLM calls external functions, APIs, or MCP servers, and how the results flow back into the loop.
- Model routing — which model handles which step, and how you swap models without rewriting the app.
Frameworks that only give you the third concern (LiteLLM, OpenRouter) are model gateways, not agent frameworks. Frameworks that only give you the second (raw tool-use SDKs) are LLM SDKs, not agent frameworks. What we're comparing here are systems that ship the whole stack — state, tools, routing, plus enterprise concerns like tracing and evals.
The four contenders
1. LangGraph
LangGraph is LangChain's second act. If LangChain was a chain, LangGraph is a directed graph with explicit state. Nodes are functions, edges are conditions, and the state object is a typed Pydantic model that mutates as the graph executes.
Strengths.
- The graph model is genuinely readable. When a stakeholder asks "what does this agent do?", you can show them the graph diagram and they get it in under a minute.
- LangSmith integration for tracing is best-in-class. If you care about evals — and in 2026 you have to — this is the ecosystem that gives you the most out of the box.
- Streaming is first-class. Token-level, node-level, event-level. Front-end teams love it.
- Human-in-the-loop is not an afterthought. You can pause a graph, wait for a human decision, and resume — with full state preservation.
Weaknesses.
- The API surface is enormous. Between
StateGraph,MessageGraph,create_react_agent,create_supervisor_workflow, and about six ways to add memory, new developers get lost fast. - Python-first. There's a TypeScript port but it's a version behind, and the docs assume Python.
- LangChain the parent lib has a reputation problem. Some engineering leaders won't touch it on principle.
Best for: teams that need visibility, observability, and human-in-the-loop, and are OK with Python. Regulated industries, customer support, code review agents.
2. CrewAI
CrewAI took the opposite bet from LangGraph. Instead of graphs, it uses a role + task + crew metaphor. You define agents ("researcher", "writer", "editor"), you give each one a role and tools, and then you give the crew a task. The crew figures out the collaboration.
Strengths.
- The mental model is closer to how non-engineers think about teams. Product managers can read a Crew definition and understand it.
- Setup is fast. From
pip installto a working two-agent crew is under 20 minutes. - Excellent for content-heavy pipelines: research → outline → draft → edit → publish. Marketing teams have adopted it aggressively.
Weaknesses.
- The abstraction leaks under pressure. When you need retries with backoff, or partial-failure recovery, or streaming, you end up dropping down to raw LangChain-style code anyway.
- Observability is thinner than LangGraph. There's tracing, but it doesn't feel like a first-class citizen.
- Cost predictability is a real problem. Because agents can decide to call each other, a runaway crew can burn through a token budget in a single request.
Best for: content ops, marketing workflows, research assistants, internal tools where speed to prototype matters more than production hardening.
3. OpenAI AgentKit (formerly the Assistants API + Responses API)
OpenAI consolidated three separate offerings — Assistants, Runs, and Tools — into what they now call AgentKit. It's a hosted framework: you configure agents in the OpenAI dashboard or SDK, and OpenAI runs the loop for you.
Strengths.
- Zero infrastructure. No orchestrator to deploy, no state store to maintain. This alone saves weeks for small teams.
- Tightest possible integration with the OpenAI model catalog. New reasoning modes, new vision features — you get them without a client bump.
- Built-in file search, code interpreter, and computer use. These are hard to replicate elsewhere.
Weaknesses.
- Vendor lock-in is total. Migrating away means rewriting from scratch.
- No model choice. If you want to route the cheap steps to Haiku or a self-hosted small model, AgentKit is not for you.
- The dashboard-first workflow doesn't fit version-controlled engineering. Reproducing an agent config across environments requires custom tooling that OpenAI still hasn't shipped cleanly.
- Data residency. For KSA and UAE clients who cannot let data leave the region, this is often a non-starter.
Best for: teams that are already all-in on OpenAI, that don't have infrastructure engineers to spare, and that ship consumer-facing products where the whole world runs on GPT-class models anyway.
4. Anthropic Deep Agents
Deep Agents is Anthropic's answer to the framework question, and it launched with big-name deployments — Stripe's "Kai" and monday.com's "Sidekick" both run on it. The core primitive is a planning-and-execution loop: an agent writes a plan, executes steps, evaluates outcomes, and updates the plan.
Strengths.
- Uses Claude's native strengths — long context, careful reasoning, and honest uncertainty — better than any competitor.
- The planning phase produces artifacts you can review before execution. Big win for regulated deployments where humans need to sign off.
- Excellent for long-horizon tasks: research reports, code refactors, multi-step ops that a single LLM call can't handle.
- MCP-native. Deep Agents was designed alongside MCP, so tool integration feels seamless (see our MCP v2 explainer for why that matters).
Weaknesses.
- Younger than the alternatives. Less community content, fewer Stack Overflow answers, thinner debugging playbook.
- Costs skew higher because Claude models are more expensive per token, and Deep Agents encourages deep-thinking runs.
- TypeScript SDK is the primary target — Python support is second-class in a way that's the mirror image of LangGraph.
Best for: complex reasoning tasks, research agents, enterprise deployments where the client is already a Claude customer, and any workload where explainability matters more than raw throughput.

A decision framework you can actually use
We give clients a short decision tree. It's not scientific, but it works.
1. Are you handling regulated data (health, finance, government)? → If yes, self-hosted frameworks only. Rule out AgentKit. Pick LangGraph or Deep Agents.
2. Do you need to route between cheap and expensive models to control cost? → If yes, rule out AgentKit. LangGraph is the strongest here.
3. Is the agent doing content-heavy work (research, writing, summarization)? → CrewAI or Deep Agents. CrewAI if speed to ship matters more than depth; Deep Agents if depth matters more.
4. Is the agent doing complex reasoning over long context (code refactors, research reports, planning)? → Deep Agents, almost always.
5. Are you a small team without infra engineers? → AgentKit, unless one of the previous filters ruled it out.
6. Do you need enterprise-grade observability and human-in-the-loop, and can you tolerate a bigger API surface? → LangGraph.
When to build your own instead
We say this to about one in five clients: you probably don't need a framework.
If your agent is a single loop with two tools, a framework is overhead. The OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google SDKs all support tool use natively. A while loop, a try/except, and a state dictionary get you 80% of what a framework gives you, without the dependency footprint. We've shipped production agents in under 200 lines of TypeScript with no framework at all.
The heuristic: if you can't sketch your agent's control flow on a napkin in under a minute, you need a framework. If you can, you probably don't.
The 2026 bet nobody's making publicly
Here's an observation you won't see in most vendor content. The framework layer will consolidate around MCP within eighteen months. LangGraph, CrewAI, and Deep Agents already speak MCP fluently. AgentKit is the outlier. Whether OpenAI capitulates and adds first-class MCP support (they've hinted) or pushes their own protocol will decide whether AgentKit remains a serious contender at the enterprise tier.
If we had to bet, we'd say the framework choice will matter less in 2027 than it does today. What will matter is the tool ecosystem, the evals, and the observability. Pick the framework whose ecosystem you can live with, not the one with the prettiest homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Which framework should a Bengaluru or Middle East team pick if data residency is a hard requirement? LangGraph or Anthropic Deep Agents, both self-hosted on regional infra (AWS Mumbai, AWS Bahrain, or a private cloud). AgentKit will not clear compliance review for most KSA public-sector or UAE regulated-industry clients.
Can I mix frameworks in one product? Yes, and we do. A common pattern: LangGraph for the main orchestrator, an isolated Deep Agents run for a specific "deep research" subtask. What you should never do is have two frameworks try to own the same state store.
What's the ballpark cost of running an agent in production? For a mid-complexity agent handling ~10,000 requests per day: LangGraph on GPT-4-class models runs about $2,000-4,000/month in tokens plus $200-500 in infra. AgentKit at the same volume runs $2,500-5,000 all-in. Deep Agents runs $3,500-7,000 because Claude models are pricier per token but often need fewer steps. CrewAI is the wild card — well-tuned it's cheapest, poorly-tuned it can be the most expensive of the four.
Is LangChain (the parent library) dead? No, but it's no longer the recommended starting point. Start with LangGraph directly. LangChain is now the plumbing under LangGraph.
Building an agent that actually ships
If you're picking a framework for a specific business problem — customer support deflection, sales research, code review, compliance monitoring — the right choice is rarely the framework with the most GitHub stars. It's the one whose failure modes you can debug at 2am when a real user is affected.
